What is SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) refers to the actions & techniques used to affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results. There are many techniques that are implemented in order to affect a page’s position in a search engine.

Most of the top search engine providers frowned very heavily on using such techniques and if they catch a website using such techniques, they will often ban the website and remove it from their search engine index. These techniques seek to manipulate a sites organic listings.

So, why do companies risk getting banned from a major search engine just to move their rankings up? The answer is because high rankings in the search engines translate into a high volume of traffic, leads and sales. Some companies are willing to risk getting banned for the short term potential gains. Of course, most feel like they won’t be detected and the lure of high rankings is just too difficult to resist.
